This September 16th and 17th, families are invited to join the Telling Tales Festival as it marks 15 years of celebrating stories with two days of free family fun. Discover a world of stories in the beautiful natural setting of Hendrie Park, Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG).

Co-hosted by Hamilton Public Library, Rotary Clubs of Hamilton and Burlington, RBG, Dan Lawrie International Sculpture Garden, and with Exclusive Financial Institution Sponsorship by TD Bank Group (TD), the Festival features over 30 national and local children’s authors, illustrators, and storytellers in addition to activities and experiences that are sure to engage and delight.

“The theme of this year’s Festival–Stories Help Us Grow–both describes our hope for the community we serve as well as Telling Tales’ commitment to self-reflection and reimagining,” shares Executive Director, Heather Kanabe. “This year we welcome the chance to look inward as we shape Festival programming to continue to inspire a love of reading and improve literacy and outward as we develop new partnerships that reflect the community we live in. We hope that you join us in an exploration of how storytelling unites us all and helps us grow.”

This year’s Festival is the place to check out September’s great Children’s Literature releases, with headliners traveling in from across the country.  From Winnipeg, David A. Robertson is a member of Norway House Cree Nation and Governor General’s Literary Award winner presenting the latest title in his middle-grade Misewa Saga, The Stone Child. Telling Tales is excited to welcome Giller Prize winner Esi Edugyan from Victoria, making her Children’s Literature debut at the Festival with her picture book, Garden of Lost Socks. Fans of the Stella and Sam series will be thrilled that Montreal-based Marie-Louise Gay will be returning to the Festival this year with her latest book, Hopscotch.

At Telling Tales there is something for everyone, from toddlers to teens! The Festival features five stages that will include presentations from Ambreen Butt-Hussain, Ainara Alleyne, Andrea Curtis, Andrew Larsen, Anoosha Syed, Brittany Luby, Charlene Chua, Christopher Steininger, Erin Bow, Goodbodyfeel, Hamilton Children’s Choir, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, Josh Taylor, Keltie Thomas, Kenneth Oppel, Kevin Sylvester, Linh Nguyen, My Friend Christopher, Nathan Muir, Hexe Noire, Nadia L. Hohn, Richard Scrimger, S.K. Ali, Sarah Raughley, Vikki VanSickle, Yolanda T. Marshall, and the Instrument Petting Zoo (Hamilton Music Collective).

“At TD, we recognize that reading has the power to spark children’s curiosity and imagination. It empowers them to make informed choices and imagine a better future, while equipping them with strong foundations and the confidence to make that future a reality,” says Jayme Martin, District Vice President for Greater Hamilton at TD Canada Trust.

The fun doesn’t stop there! Our Global Garden Activity Centre features interactive activities, puppet shows, and more presented by partners including: The Art Gallery of Hamilton, Burlington Public Library, Dundas Valley School of Art (DVSA), EarlyON and Family Centres, Hamilton Public Library, and Imagine in the Park. Festival goers can look forward to roaming literary characters from Burlington Student Theatre Company, the Giant Book Swap, and Shop presented by Hamilton Literacy Council, a StoryWalk® of Pigs Can’t Fly in memory of the late Wallace Edwards co-presented by Scholastic Canada, and of course, spending time exploring the beauty of the Royal Botanical Gardens with guided tours of the Dan Lawrie International Sculpture Garden.

The Burlington Downtown Business Association (BDBA) has kicked off patio season with the installation of new walkways/pedestrian by-passes throughout the Downtown small business community. Over 125 meters of new public infrastructure has been built in five strategic locations throughout the BIA (Business Improvement Area).

The by-passes will accent areas with a significant concentration of eateries, including: Pine Street, John Street, Elgin Street and along the north dining corridor of Lakeshore Road. These custom-built new walkways are designed to elevate the dining experience throughout the core as they safely navigate patrons and visitors throughout our heralded dining district.

Each walkway system will feature a pair of stand-alone planter boxes, with seasonal plantings, to beautify the experience. There are ten planter boxes in total, stationed at the entrance and exit points to the wooden walkways. Each walkway will work to attract thousands of diners, visitors, and residents throughout the City of Burlington’s confirmed patio season: May-October 2023.

”These “pop-up” features have actually taken months to design and finance though they are being installed over the course of one day. Downtown dining is intimately linked to our brand, tourists and locals have come to view our small business waterfront community as a Mecca for dining in Halton Region. As they should, we have well over fifty exciting restaurants and eateries to explore. These installations fulfil two important parts of the BDBA’s mandate- beautification and enhancing public infrastructure, and we’re doing it all in a stylish way”, said Brian Dean, Executive Director of the BDBA.

Liza Bouchard-Bain, Chair of the BDBA Board of Directors agrees. “We could not wait one more season to showcase a centrally-managed, world-class walkway system. For too many seasons our patio experience has been tainted by orange barriers demarking the public/private rights of way. We received significant feedback that this made for a poor aesthetic when enjoying a meal outdoors on a warm summer evening. The Board listened and responded with an elevated look and feel on nearly every street corner.”

The new walkways have also caught the attention of sponsors. Good corporate citizens The Kuchma Team, Paradiso Restaurant, and, Stoner & Company Family Law have signed up to add their names to the flower boxes bookending each walkway.

Picture this – your loved ones are coming over for dinner. It could be a special occasion. Maybe a birthday or a celebration. Your brother got engaged. Your best friend landed her dream job. Maybe they’re coming over simply to huddle around good company and even better food. Whatever the reason, you pull out your best. You drape the table with a crisp white cloth, lay place settings, and add an arrangement of soft pink roses. You’re set on making your Nonna’s famous ravioli (which pairs perfectly with your marinara).

With everything prepped, you wait for your guests to arrive.

This encapsulates the love, mission, and mandate – the heart – of local restaurateurs. Each owner has carefully crafted their menu, often inspired by flavours from their childhood. Then they package it together with atmosphere, music, linens, and staff to bring you a unique experience. An extension of their home.

This February (and again in the fall), select restaurants in Oakville and Burlington are taking part in a culinary event you don’t want to miss. Local restaurants will offer Prix-fixe lunch and dinner menus featuring unique or popular items. Prix-fixe menu is a collection of predetermined menu items presented as a multi-course meal at a set price, offering value and/or specialty dishes apart from the traditional menu.

We all know the pandemic has been hard on local businesses, especially the restaurant industry. But after the roar of the holidays, the months leading up to patio season can be fairly tough, too. The Taste programs are a great way to support your local hospitality sector and enjoy delicious meals at an exclusive price point. There’s no better time to try a Taste of Oakville, a Taste of Burlington, and a taste of something new.

Taste of Oakville has expanded in recent years, thanks to funding from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport. Visit Oakville is now running the program and this has enabled restaurants from all parts of town to participate. In 2022, Taste of Oakville partnered with 35 beloved local restaurants. With new restaurant openings and the growth of the program, 2023 is expected to be one of the largest Taste events Oakville has seen.

Kicking off on February 15th, the event will take place over three weeks in Bronte, Downtown, Kerr, and across Oakville. Popular restaurants like Piano Piano, Paradiso, Jac’s Bistro, and The Mermaid will offer exclusive prix-fixe lunch and dinner menus for dine-in and take-out. But you’ll also find a fun mix of pubs (like The King’s Arms), bakeries (such as Sugar Suite Cakes), Pizzerias (Dough Box, The Boot Social Pizzeria), family restaurants, ethnic restaurants, and even gluten and vegan options (Boon Burger, Community Restaurant). There is something for everyone: family night, date night, and even lunch on-the-go.

New this year is live music! Taste of Oakville has partnered with ten local musicians to perform in restaurants every Tuesday during the event. A full list of live music events and each restaurant’s Prix-fix menu will be posted on the Taste of Oakville website as the event draws near. We can’t wait to see what’s on the menu for this year!

In March 2008, Tourism Burlington invited local restaurants to meet with representatives from Tourism Burlington, and the Burlington Downtown and Aldershot Business Communities to discuss ways to increase awareness of Burlington as a dining and culinary destination.

From that initial meeting, it was suggested that a committee be struck up to look into the feasibility of a Prix fixe dining program. Committee members came together from Tourism Burlington, Aldershot Village BIA, Burlington Downtown Business Association, and local restaurants to develop and design the program. Now revving up for its 15th year, Taste of Burlington launches its two-and-a-half-week program on February 21st.

Burlington is quickly becoming known as a culinary destination, and Taste is a great way to showcase all it has to offer. From restaurants and pubs to cafes, Taste of Burlington has tremendous support from local restaurants and the community, and after the ups and downs of the pandemic the last few years, we are expecting the 2023 event to be bigger and beter than ever.

Taste of Burlington runs twice each year in February/March and again in the fall, with restaurants across the city offering a Prix-fixe dining menu for lunch and dinner. However, the rest of the year they promote culinary programs and events in and around Burlington, such as Burlington Food Tours, E-A-T, Lakeside a la Carte, and more!

Every home has it: dead space without a designated purpose. There’s the hall closet where you toss shoes, backpacks, and coats, and…is that a pair of ski boots? Plus, the spot under the stairs where you house bins of outgrown baby clothes and keepsakes…just in case. You might have grandchildren one day. These spaces, while often underutilized, are valuable real estate in your home.

Dominique Rutledge of Rutledge Improvements has transformed underutilized spaces like these into fun and functional spaces. Most recently, Rutledge worked on our Editor, Anneliese Lawton’s basement, turning the empty wasted space under the stairs into a fun playhouse for her three children (all under the age of 6).

“We cut it all open, drywalled, trimmed it out, made an entranceway,” says Rutledge. To make it look like a house, Rutledge added a shiplap to the front of the entrance and a window with a hanging basket to put a pretend garden. A platform at the upper level of the stairs provides a fun, enclosed fort area below, and a ladder allows the kids to use the platform as a lookout.

Rutledge says under the stairs is one of the most common spaces homeowners like to transform for storage solutions, but this is the first time he’s used the area to add functional living space to the basement.

Rutledge Improvements

From a design perspective, Katie Campbell from Katie Campbell Interiors & Design says that her goal is to always maximize space and functionality in a home. Adding, “We hate wasted or unused space. At a recent project, we were redoing the staircase – so we decided to leave it open underneath and create a built-in bench seat. We added a niche in the underside of the stairs to be used for books, a wall sconce above, and a comfortable seat cushion…it became the perfect reading nook for their kids.” When designing new builds, Campbell notes that the elimination of wasted space should be considered during the initial design stages, such as making rooms larger to remove dead corners.

But if you’ve purchased a home that already has awkward spaces, Rutledge has some fun recommendations. He once created a wine cellar under a set of stairs. With six feet of space at the highest point, the wine cellar was tall enough to be a walk-in. “It was custom with glass on the outside, all cedar on the inside, and custom wine bottle holders,” says Rutledge.

A closet can provide a perfect solution for families who don’t have a spare bedroom to house a nursery. By removing the walls on either side of the door to widen the entryway, you can easily fit a crib. Having the crib within steps of your bed is not only a convenient space-saving solution but means you don’t have far to go for all those late-night wakings.

If you’ve always wanted a home office or crafting space but don’t have a spare room, a closet can provide the ideal workspace. Add a desk and some floating shelves, and some fun wallpaper for an inspirational office. Simple wall-mount Kallax drawers are a great storage solution for supplies that you want to keep hidden away. Rutledge suggests opening up the walls when removing the closet door so your office doesn’t feel closed in and instead becomes a nook, an added extension of the room’s space.

By utilizing tucked-away spaces, you can reclaim square footage into something cozy, functional – and completely unique to your needs.

This post is provided by Burlington Economic Development. If you are a small business in Burlington, Ontario, this post is for you!

It’s Small Business Week! While it’s critical to support our small businesses all year round, this week we take the opportunity to celebrate our small businesses and showcase their resilience. Burlington Economic Development is committed to supporting small business through programs like Digital Main Street.

As businesses across Ontario reimagine their operations in a post-COVID retail environment, local Burlington business owners are looking for tools to help transform their digital strategies to reach new customers through online channels. Administered by the team at Burlington Economic Development, the Digital Transformation Grant from Digital Main Street has been a valuable resource for many small businesses across the city. This vital grant funding supports various digital marketing initiatives, website design or improvements, social media, productivity software, and more.

Social media support and adoption of software is one area that the Digital Transformation Grant supports. Tara Lester, owner of The Olive Oil Dispensary, is one of the many small business owners in Burlington that has been able to tap into the program. “I applied for this grant to improve my digital presence on all social media platforms,” said Lester. “This grant has allowed me the opportunity to expand my business social awareness and increase my sales though a more complete and unified social presence.” The COVID-19 pandemic brought on unprecedented pressure for small businesses to take their businesses online to accommodate things like curbside pick-up and delivery. The Digital Main Street program directly addresses this need.

In Downtown Burlington, Shirley Cope, the owner of The Knitters Boutique Inc., had the opportunity to hire support for social media through this grant funding. The increase in her revenue came quickly. “Receiving the grant has helped tremendously,” Cope explained. “I have been able to hire help with Instagram and with rebuilding my website. Almost instantly, sales came from Instagram posts.” Shirley also offered vital advice for other small business owners, saying that, “More than ever an online presence is imperative. Do your market research and know your target audience and reach out to them.”

Businesses can also use social media to expand brand awareness. Melanie Bianco, from Aldershot Dental Hygiene, shared that, “social media is a wonderful tool to get your name out locally”. As a grant recipient, Bianco is planning to use the Digital Transformation Grant funding to aid in the expansion of the business, and Bianco is looking forward to expanding to provide services to seniors in long-term care homes.

The Digital Transformation Grant is also available for owners looking to offer website and e-commerce solutions for their businesses. Aldershot Foot Clinic’s updated website will be ready next week, which they hope will result in more traffic and online books, according to owner Heidi Moris. Moris is also excited about using a portion of the grant for advertising in order to help clients know they are there and how they can help.

Small business owners across Burlington looking to reach new customers through new or redeveloped digital strategies can learn more about Burlington’s Digital Service Squad services here. Applications for the $2,500 Digital Transformation Grant are open until October 31, 2022.
