Oakville Galleries announces its summer exhibition Rogue Planet by German artist duo Hedda Roman, opening on Saturday, June 22. Following the opening is our Summer Party and the first program of Sunset Kino, Canada’s only outdoor, avant-garde film festival.

Exhibition opening events: Saturday, June 22nd, 2024
2–5pm: exhibition opening, Centennial Square
3–6pm: exhibition Reception and Remarks at Gairloch Gardens
6–10pm: Summer Party & Sunset Kino in Gairloch Gardens

Hedda Roman will be in attendance.

All are welcome. All events are free. Join the Art Bus!

The exhibition Rogue Planet by Hedda Roman, explores the complexities of fictional biography, origin, and identity through AI technologies. Central to this exhibition is Oldboy, an avatar and Latent Space Traveller, whose poetic dialogues bridge digital realms with reality. Oldboy’s existence challenges more traditional concepts of origin and identity, reflecting the transformative impact of digital technologies and AI on our understanding of selfhood.

The exhibition invites visitors to reconsider identity in the context of digital narratives and essentialism, and prompts a reflection on how machine learning and digital technologies shape, distort, and reconstruct our perceptions of identity and reality. Ultimately Rogue Planet encourages deeper contemplation on the influence of digitalization on identity as well as the authenticity of our personal and collective stories.

Hedda Roman is a Düsseldorf-based artist mesh composed of Hedda Schattanik and Roman Szczesny. Interweaving cinematographic elements with surreal animation, literature, drama, sculpture, photography, and drawing, they create, among others, immersive video installations as well as computer-generated images. Solo exhibitions include Sies + Höke, Düsseldorf (2023, 2021), Salzburger Kunstverein, (2023), Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf (2021), Sammlung Philara, Düsseldorf (2019), Julia Stoschek Collection, Studio 54, Düsseldorf (2019), Insel Hombroich, Neuss (2018), COMA Gallery, Sydney (2018).

Hedda Roman are also Oakville Galleries’ first artists-in-residence for 2024. This unique artist residency and apartment is located at Gairloch Gardens, one of the region’s most beautiful parks.

Special thanks to Goethe-Institut Toronto for supporting this exhibition & residency.

Sunset Kino

June 22, 2024–July 11, 2024

Introduced by the programmers and commencing at sunset, audiences experience a curated program of films and videos by Canadian and international artists.

This year’s theme, “Everything is a Lie,” complements the summer exhibition by Hedda Roman. The program explores narratives that inform our current world, encouraging deeper consideration of the influence of digitalization on identity and the authenticity of our personal and collective stories. The program thus ventures into themes of truth and fiction; reality and virtuality; distortion and essentialism; disinformation, propaganda and representation; as well as how art, film, ideas and politics all intersect in a rapidly changing world.

I purchased my first original oil painting about 20 years ago. I felt equal parts sophisticated and reckless at the time. The act of confidently selecting and buying an original seemed a sophisticated step into refined living, but the impulsive extravagance of the act was at odds with my uber-practical side.

I clearly found a way to reconcile the two and was soon emboldened to collect more originals over the years that followed – from a local art show, a door-to-door salesperson, eBay (yes, eBay), an outdoor market in Hong Kong and a local art gallery, to name a few. While there are infinite ways to analyze, judge and value a work of art, for me, it all came down to one simple determinant: did it bring me joy when I looked at it?

Once I’d accepted the notion that art is whatever you decide it to be, any limitations on how or where I should source my next work of art evaporated. For non-aficionados of art like me, this is the essence of appreciating art.

Selecting a piece of art is subjective, says Claudia Pettigrew, director of Summer & Grace Gallery in downtown Oakville. “Most people think they either like or don’t like a work of art. They can see the value in it, or not.” In other words, you’re free to enjoy art any way you wish, and you don’t need to be in the market to buy an original to frequent your local art gallery.

In fact, Pettigrew encourages everyone to come to the gallery as often as possible. “Nine times out of 10 times they don’t buy anything, but it plants a seed,” she says. Over time, you naturally build a preference or “taste” for what you like and when it’s time to start collecting, you’ll be ready.

In the age of home décor savvy and matching colour palettes, it may seem counter-intuitive to leave such concerns out when selecting artwork for your space. “I tend to say if you love a piece and you love an artist, it will fit anywhere,” says Pettigrew. If you do plan to add an original to your home, think about making space for the art, rather than finding art to match the space. You can always buy a throw pillow or blanket to help tie in the colours of your room.

If you’re already a collector of art, want to develop a personal taste for it, or simply enjoy looking at local art, Oakville and Burlington are home to many art galleries and museums. Drop in while you’re out and about, or grab a friend and lead your own art tour one cold November afternoon. You can also plan ahead by checking their websites for upcoming exhibitions.

Just over an hour away from Burlington, you’ll find a quaint little town along the Avon River. Rich with history, and home to Justin Bieber and Shakespearean plays, Stratford is one of Ontario’s top road trip destinations. From the culinary experience to theatres and beautiful trails, you’ll want to add this theatre town to your summer bucket list.

Planning a summer trip to Stratford?

We have your itinerary ready…

The Stratford Festival

Celebrating its 70th season, The Stratford Festival combines Shakespeare with contemporary dramas and classic stories. This year, audiences will be treated to the performances of Hamlet, Chicago, The Miser, Little Women, Richard ll, All’s Well That Ends Well, Death and the King’s Horseman, Every Little Nookie, Hamlet-91, and 1939. Running from April to October, The Stratford Festival is a must-see. Tickets can be purchased at www.stratfordfestival.ca

Allen’s Alley

Allen’s Alley, originally a passage to the Livery Stables behind The Wellington Street Hotel, is now home to 13 graphic painted murals honouring talent and celebrity visitors. Stratford is well known for its art scene, and Allen’s Alley is one of the most popular destinations  amongst visitors and artists. Located between Wellington Street and Erie Street, each mural depicts a unique glimpse of Stratford’s musical history.

Avon River Loop

While widely known for its art scene, Stratford has another defining feature – the picturesque Avon River. The Avon River Loop is a 2.6-kilometre pathway around the Avon River. Enjoy sights as you navigate the trail (which only takes about 35 minutes to walk from start to finish). It’s the perfect place to view wildlife, enjoy the river, and even stop for a picnic in the park. Visitors love bird watching, hiking, and even cross-country skiing in the winter. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit, no matter what season. Bonus points: the path is paved, making it accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.

Chocolate Trail

Who doesn’t love chocolate? This self-guided tour is the perfect experience for both kids and adults. Follow along the trail as you experience Stratford’s world-famous confectioners and bakers. With each trail purchase, you get to choose which six stops, out of the participating businesses, to redeem your six vouchers for a chocolate delight on your self-guided tour. Every stop is unique and features a different chocolatey treat to enjoy.

Stratford Gardens

This garden has quite a history. The feature most visitors notice immediately is the 65 foot (20 metre) chimney, all that remains of the Dufton Woolen Mill that initially occupied the site. The mill was built in 1874 and burned in 1919, leaving only the chimney that still stands as an imposing landmark. The garden was first conceived to include only plants mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays. That emphasis has changed over the years. Many plants in the garden are definitely “Shakespearean” (look for fine stands of herbs such as fennel, rue, tarragon, and rosemary). Still, visitors are sometimes surprised to find decidedly non-Shakespearean plants as well.  You may wish to pause to admire the gazebo and nearby formal beds of hosta, ferns, begonias, grasses, and amaranth.

Whether you’re looking for a weekend away with friends, a date-night with someone special, or a family getaway – Stratford has a little something for everyone.
