Reconnect with friends and family over incredible cuisine this winter during Taste of Oakville 2022!

This year’s annual culinary celebration will see over 30 Oakville restaurants serve up unique prix-fixe lunch and/or dinner menus for 24 delicious days between Feb. 15 and March 10, 2022.

Thanks to the funding Taste of Oakville received as part of the Province of Ontario’s Reconnect Festival and Event Program, Taste customers will have the chance to win tickets to see Canadian Indie pop stars Walk Off The Earth perform at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts on March 31, 2022.

“We are grateful to be the recipients of a Reconnect grant again this year and thank MPP Stephen Crawford and the province for their support,” said Rebecca Edgar, Visit Oakville’s executive director. “We are thrilled to return with Taste of Oakville 2022 at a time when support for our local restaurants is so critical. We hope that the chance to win tickets to a private Walk Off The Earth concert will provide some added excitement, perhaps catch the eye of a new generation of Taste-goers, and provide a fun and lively way to celebrate at the end of March.”

Your Taste of Oakville receipts will count as entries towards this private concert and can be submitted on the Taste of Oakville website. Multiple entries are allowed, so you can enjoy as many Taste menus as you like while submitting valid ballots.

For the last two years, we’ve been dreaming of leaving our homes, travelling to faraway places, and begging for a change of scenery. However, if there is one time of year when many of us are okay with staying at home, it’s the holidays! We can go right back to our visions of airplanes and beaches in January, but as the holiday season draws near, let’s go back to enjoying the comfort of family, community, and tradition. Our hometowns have been here for us all along, and they want to celebrate this time of year with us once more. The local BIA’s have many events in store for us to ensure our holidays at home are as special as ever.

Bronte Village

At Home in Bronte (winter edition) is back, and the chairs are even more beautiful than ever. Tour professionally painted Muskoka chairs all over the village. If you missed it last year, you’ll definitely want to see how Bronte has taken this summer tradition and winterized it!

Take in the beauty of these chairs that symbolize a piece of our home, and search for the hidden lighthouse icons on each one. They will be set up throughout the business district and Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park all winter.

Downtown Oakville

The historical buildings, charming shops, and cozy, contemporary restaurants of downtown Oakville make it a great destination. Add in their holiday light display and signature 20 ft tall ribbon tree and you’ve got a perfect combination for a festive outing.

While you’re downtown, Santa needs your help. Check out his new augmented reality scavenger hunt that promises one lucky player $1,000! All you have to do is find eight characters hiding at secret locations throughout Downtown Oakville. Keep an eye out while supporting small businesses and checking off gifts on your list!

Mark your calendars for Fridays Downtown this December as participating restaurants stay open late, offer special savings, giveaways, live music, and special surprises!
Follow Downtown Oakville on social media to get updates, receive personalized gift ideas, and have a chance at winning daily gift-aways!

Downtown Burlington

For many, the Burlington parade has been a staple event we look forward to, and Santa hates to disappoint. After an overwhelmingly positive response to his surprise neighbourhood tour last year, he has agreed to return! Santa will make his way throughout the town in his antique fire truck once again this year on December 4th and 5th. Should you spot him, be sure to use the hashtag #SpotSantaBurlON to spread the magic and reveal his current location!

The Burlington Lakeside Festival of Lights has been an iconic landmark of the holiday season for a quarter-century. The display will return this year beginning on November 26th at Spencer Smith Park. Take in the magic of the waterfront with a stroll through this spectacular themed display beginning at 4 p.m. every day until midnight. Want to see it on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Orthodox Christmas, or New Year’s Eve? The lights will stay on all day and night on those days.

Word has it a Christmas market might be coming our way. The city is discussing a four-day market from December 9th to 12th in the lot between Pearl and Elizabeth streets. They hope to highlight the local businesses while showcasing the talent and strengths of our amazing community. They may even have music provided by the Sound of Music Festival!

With so many exciting things happening in our own hometowns, surely no one would dream of going anywhere else… at least not until January!

Every year, cottagers anxiously await the official opening of summer: Victoria Day Weekend. And as soon as the calendar strikes May 24th, cars packed with coolers, pillows, and fishing rods make their way down Highway 400 toward the land of the “Muskokas”.

Muskoka is a collection of wonderful towns that together make up the most popular cottage country area in Ontario. With over 1,600 lakes, thousands of acres of green forest, and lots of great restaurants and places to stay, it’s no wonder everyone wants to be there.

But after every last smore, campfire song, and cannonball off the dock has been had, as lake temperatures drop and leaves start to change colour, cottagers prepare for the unofficial closing: The Bala Cranberry Festival.

The Town of Bala – often referred to as the Heart of Muskoka – is a picturesque small town where Lake Muskoka empties into Moon River. The Town itself is Canada’s smallest incorporated town with a population of approximately 370 year-round residents. But throughout the summer and into the festival weekend, this small town sees anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 people.

Besides being Canada’s smallest town, Bala is home to the largest cranberry marsh in Ontario (the Johnston Cranberry Marsh) and known as the Cranberry Capital of Ontario. And what should one do when famous for cranberries? Throw an epic festival around it.

Every year since 1984, on the weekend after Thanksgiving, Bala hosts their annual (and world famous) Cranberry  Festival. Every year except for 2020, of course. However, in previous years, when the festival rolled around, the town would explode with music, events, and food – and the theme through it all: cranberries. And this year, the cranberries are back!

“After a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the board of directors is eager to bring the festival back to its fervent and loyal following,” their Facebook page reads.

The 2021 edition will be smaller to help organizers comply with health regulations. However, festival organizers say all details depend on what’s to come in the following weeks and how Public Health moves forward. “As details become available, they will be posted on our social media page and website,” festival organizers confirm. Adding, “Although the festival will be scaled down, organizers are looking to re-establish the event as one of the premier arts and crafts festivals in Ontario. This year’s event will be for the enthusiast of epicurean delights, quality arts, and affection for local and Canadian made.”

Along with the festival, Bala and surrounding towns, Gravenhurst and Minett, have stunning sights, incredible restaurants, and cozy accommodations. Both the JW Marriot Rosseau Muskoka in Minett and Marriott Residence Inn in Gravenhurst have a resort-like feel with beautiful lake views.

Dock of the Bay is a casual restaurant on Lake Muskoka a stone’s throw from the Marriott Residence – offering seafood, steak, and pasta with a lake-top deck. It’s especially romantic for couples staying in the area. In town, there’s Sawdust City Saloon. Among the adult-friendly beer taps, you’ll find a family-friendly food menu (and if you’re lucky, the outdoor food truck and ice-stream truck will still be in season).

In Muskoka Lakes, you can find Clear Lake Brewing Co., just a hop-skip-and-jump down from the festival at the corner of Hwy 169 and Southwood Road. They have a restaurant on-site, bonfire, and live music.

Also, let’s not forget all the small shops in these little towns. Shops who have been hit by the pandemic just like our beloved locals have. Explore, shop small, and bring home a piece of Bala.

The 2021 Bala Cranberry Festival will take place the weekend after Thanksgiving – October 15th to 17th.

The Oakville Chamber of Commerce (OCC) is excited to announce the launch of a “Love Local” campaign in Oakville. The campaign aims to help boost the economic recovery for local businesses, with the goal of encouraging the community to continue to support local through a mix of activations, contests, and marketing.

The logo has been brought to life into a 15-foot x 6-foot high public art installation, moving around the town of Oakville over the coming months. The OCC will also be giving away branded limited edition sweatshirts, toques and totes at pop-up events and in partnership with local businesses.

The OCC have also launched a video series with local celebrity, Chris Mei, highlighting what Oakvillians love about the Town, and the businesses that call this place home. The Oakvillegreen Conservation Association treeplanting event in collaboration with MOM2MOM BIZ® Women Entrepreneur Network is taking place on Saturday, September 18th 2021 from 10 am to 12 pm at Woodgate Woods Park.

Thanks to donations from the MOM2MOM BIZ® members, over 250 native trees were purchased to be planted during the event. The aim of this event is to enhance the McCraney Creek natural ecosystem while connecting the local community with nature. Planting trees is one of the local actions we can take to combat climate change, increase our urban forest canopy, protect our watersheds and improve local biodiversity.

“Engaging the public in our efforts is extremely important, and we’re grateful to MOM2MOM BIZ® members for their hands-on participation at Woodgate Woods.” said Beatriz Gomez, Oakvillegreen’s Program Director. “This type of group action is a wonderful commitment to our community, helping to support healthy urban forests in Oakville”.

Since their founding over 20 years ago, Oakvillegreen has planted 35,500 native trees in partnership with 12,500 community volunteers, including youth, seniors, corporate and community groups.

“Our members are women entrepreneurs and small business owners who are committed to helping their local communities. We are proud to take part in this event with Oakvillegreen, which will contribute to greening our Oakville community” added Bella Onay, Founder of MOM2MOM BIZ®.  “By coming together to plant trees, we’re taking local action to support urban nature and building community connections.”

Oakvillegreen Conservation Association (Oakvillegreen) is a non-partisan environmental charity that has been helping to protect and restore nature through community education and local action, since 2000. Their objectives are to reconnect people to nature, protect local water quality, increase climate resiliency, increase natural habitat and tree cover and improve local biodiversity. Each year, Oakvillegreen engages hundreds of volunteers in tree planting and invasive species removal events in Oakville parks and greenspace, in partnership with the Town of Oakville. Through direct engagement, and the promotion of nature-based climate solutions, Oakvillegreen is working to create a greener Oakville. www.oakvillegreen.org

Founded in 2017, MOM2MOM BIZ® is a business feature, referral and support network powered by women for women entrepreneurs and small business owners. As an entrepreneurial network, MOM2MOM BIZ® focuses on building community connections and enhancing collaborations while working towards personal and business growth. The network’s collective community initiatives bring small businesses together to support local causes.

After they were postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Games are now set to begin later this summer in Tokyo. Kicking off Friday, July 23rd, with the opening ceremony at Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium – the Summer Olympics will span a total of 17 days.

The best part? Well, what we think the best part is anyway – local athletes from Burlington, Oakville and Milton will be competing in the Games! Here’s who to look out for:

Oakville Paddler, Alanna Bray-Lougheed

Burloak Canoe Club alumnus Alanna Bray-Lougheed is heading to the Olympic Games as a sprint kayaker! Alanna began paddling at the age of 10 when her mother signed her up for lessons after she bought a canoe but Alanna didn’t know how to paddle. Eighteen years later, Alanna is a Burloak Canoe Club champion and the only  female from the club to qualify for the Olympics. Many of the country’s top paddlers have come out of the Burloak Canoe Club – and multiple Olympic medals have been won by their alumni.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics weren’t always the plan for Alanna, though. After failing to make the world cup team in 2019, Alanna was considering retiring from the sport. She then competed at the 2019 PanAm games and won gold in K2 and K4 500m races, reigniting her confidence and passion for the sport. Now, Alanna has qualified to race K4 500m with her teammates at the Olympic Games.

Burlington Sailor, Evan DePaul

Evan DePaul was 14 years old when he asked his parents to sign him up for sailing camp at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club…then, he asked them if he could quit after just one week.  With encouragement from his father, Evan stuck it out at camp. And in a turn of events, he enjoyed camp so much that he went back the following summer, entering his first regatta in 2012.

Evan will represent Canada this year in the 49er class along with skipper, William Jones of Ancaster. The two first teamed up in the summer of 2015 to race in the 49er FX, before moving into the 49er in 2016. Just a year later, they won gold at the 2017 Junior World Championship held at their home training centre in Kingston, Ontario.

Jones and DePaul secured Canada’s Tokyo 2020 spot in the 49er by being the top Canadian boat at the 2020 World Championships for this class.

Oakville Kayaker, Simon McTavis

Oakville-raised kayaker, Simon McTavis, moved with his family to Sydney, Australia where he began paddling in 2011 at the age of 14. He represented Australia for 7 years from 2012 – 2018 on Olympic Hopes, Junior, U23, and Senior Teams.

In 2018 after completing his Bachelor of Project Management degree, the opportunity presented itself to return home to Canada and Simon jumped at it.

In May 2019, he secured a spot on the Canadian National Team by winning gold in the K1 x 1000 & K4 x 500 at National Team Trials 1 in Montreal. Simon is a proud member of the Mississauga Canoe Club and will be racing Men’s K4 500m at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Burlington Sailor, Sarah Douglas

Sarah started sailing at the age of seven and was drawn in by her family’s love for the ocean. Growing up in Barbados, Sarah had access to the water all year-round and took advantage of it. She was just 10 years old when she competed in her first world championship in the Optimist class. Sarah returned to Canada in 2008 to attend high school and quickly became one of the top youth sailors in the country.

Of Sarah’s many successes, the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru is certainly one to be highlighted. In 2019, she stood at the top of the podium despite a bacterial infection that kept her mostly in bed when she wasn’t racing. A month later she posted a seventh-place finish at the official Olympic test event for Tokyo 2020, proving to her what perseverance could do. Sarah’s success has come despite being diagnosed at age 14 with the genetic blood disorder alpha thalassemia, which reduces the amount of hemoglobin her body can produce.

Milton Cycler, Michael Foley

Believe it or not, Milton cycler Michael Foley only began cycling when the Milton velodrome opened in 2015. Before that, he had competed in sailing – but cycling suited his competitive personality more. It wasn’t long before he found success.

In December 2017, Michael stood on his first World Cup podium as the team pursuit won silver in Milton. From there, he won medals in 2018 and once again at the Pan Am Games in 2019. Now, Michael is off to Tokyo for the ultimate cycling competition.

From all of us at Look Local Magazine, we wish all of our local (and Canadian) athletes the best of luck!

Go plastic-free this July with PARK Market & Refillery!

PARK Market & Refillery is a low-waste shop in Burlington focused on helping the community reduce single-use plastics and packaging.

“We do this by refilling home and body care products, supplying a large variety of Canadian made sustainable hard goods and are in the process of expanding our grocery items,” said Kelly Goddard, customer experience coordinator with PARK. “Our storefront is in Burlington but we try to be as mobile as possible. We participate in local pop ups and markets in Oakville and Hamilton, have a refill station in Hamilton and provide a delivery service through much of Halton.”

Throughout the month of July, PARK is hoping to raise awareness about #PlasticFreeJuly and rally people together to engage in this global initiative.

Launched as a grassroots initiative in Australia in 2011, Plastic Free July has grown into a world-wide movement to raise awareness about plastic pollution each July and encourage people to switch out their single-use plastics for eco-friendly reusable alternatives. Visit Plastic Free July online for educational resources and ideas about how you can take the challenge and be a part of the solution to reduce plastic pollution – so we can all have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities.

PARK will be setting up their mobile refill station at a variety of pop-ups and markets in the local community. Stop by to purchase sustainable lifestyle goods and join the #RefillRevolution by refilling your home and body care products with eco alternatives. Plus, by making a purchase (or refill!) with PARK in July, you’ll be supporting Water First.

“This month we are pledging to donate 10% of our sales to Water First. They are a Canadian organization working with Indigenous communities to resolve local water challenges,” said Goddard.

Will you be part of Plastic Free July by choosing to refuse single-use plastics?
