We all know that fruit and vegetables are good for you, and while you may favour a hamburger over some cucumber and hummus for lunch, getting your greens is key to staying healthy. Dietary guidelines suggest two cups of fruit and two and a half cups of vegetables per day may reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer (along with helping weight management). It’s no wonder that “juice” is booming in popularity.

Juicing is one of the easiest ways to get your daily serving of fruit and veg. And while you may already be on the smoothie wagon, juicing certainly has its time and place. Pure juice offers concentrated vitamins and nutrients, which are much easier to absorb. Blending, on the other hand, is great for meeting your daily intake of fibre (which helps with digestion, controlling blood sugar, and lowering the risk of heart disease).

But how does juicing work?

Cold-pressed juice uses a hydraulic press to extract the maximum amount of liquid from fresh fruits and vegetables. Since the cold-pressed juices aren’t pasteurized, you don’t risk losing any vitamins, nutrients, minerals, or antioxidants.

Farmer Jacks in Burlington is famous for its fresh-pressed juices, especially their 7-day juice cleanse. The cleanse includes five juices per day over seven days and is intended to help rid cravings for refined sugars and processed foods. Among the selections are the Power Cleanse or Detox Cleanse, and for added vitality, there are booster packs for immunity (carrot, celery, apple, orange, ginger, turmeric) or flu boosters (black garlic, turmeric, ginger, lemon).

If you’re not ready for a cleanse but want to add some more nutrients to your diet, Farmer Jacks offers a wide range of cold-pressed juices in a variety of flavours. Their detox power juice, consisting of kale, cilantro, celery, apple, green grape, ginger, and lime, provides energy and supports healthy skin, cell growth, and regeneration. Their antioxidant blast, a blend of carrots, grapefruit, orange, apple, raspberry, and ginger,  help you get through the day. Or try the liver flush: a blend of beet, carrot, apple, orange, lemon, and ginger.

Green Press Juice in Oakville offers certified organic cold-pressed juice and free delivery in the GTA. Juices are pressed daily, unpasteurized, and help promote a healthy and active lifestyle. Green Press also offers a juice cleanse as a way to rid your body of toxins, kick start your metabolism, increase energy levels, control and eliminate cravings and mood swings, increase mental focus and clarity, boost immunity, and help get rid of unwanted fat.

They also have a registered holistic nutritionist on live chat to help you decide which juices and programs are best for you.

The Village Juicery in Oakville makes fresh, organic, plant-based beverages, meals and cleanses. Their products are all designed by nutritionists to help you feel great, and all are made fresh every day with no UV or high-pressure processing.  Choose from a wide selection of juices and milks, booster shots, cleanses and kits.

The Bodhi Bar in Burlington offers organic cold-pressed juices, smoothies, shots and cleanses.  They specialize in organic juice cleanse packages, and use a cryogenic preservation technique to deliver the freshest and most nutrient dense products. One of their best sellers is Spice Girl – organic carrots, apples, ginger, turmeric and cinnamon. Or try the Detox Concoction – organic kale, spinach, cucumber and celery with added parsley, ginger, lemon and apple!

Trish Juice in Burlington offers freshly squeezed juice and smoothies. From the pure and simple to more exotic juices, try the Purifier: lemon, green apple, blueberry, carrot, beetroot, ginger, and coconut water. Or the Mojito: lemon, green apple, cucumber, and mint (super refreshing on a hot day). Tangy Twist has a blend of orange, green apple, carrot, beetroot, and ginger.  While the Cuban features pineapple, orange, mango, lemon, mint, honey, and coconut milk. If you want to get your omegas in, too, go for the avocado almond crunch – a delicious blend of banana, avocado, almond milk, and almonds.

Whether you’re a seasoned juicer and opt for a regular juice cleanse or merely want to get more fruit and vegetable servings into your diet, there are plenty of options to try.

We could all use a perfect spa day! Wouldn’t you agree? Your skin, body, and mind deserve a little rest and relaxation. But which spa is right for you? The answer depends on the results you’re looking for. While a day spa generally focuses on relaxation and surface-level treatments, medical spas offer more invasive treatments for deeper-seated issues. In either case, the spas are here to help you relax and feel rejuvenated – here is what you can expect from each experience.

Med Spas

Unlike a traditional day spa, a qualified physician must perform all treatments and procedures at a medical spa. Treatments combine an aesthetic medical centre and a day spa that provides non-surgical aesthetic medical services. Most treatments are minimally invasive, though they often require needles or lasers. Examples of med spa treatments would be Botox, microdermabrasion, and laser hair removal.

Le Prestige Med Spa, Burlington

“Traditional day spas are full-service spas. They offer things like massage, manicures, pedicures, and waxing. It’s a more relaxing experience. We treat skin conditions. We use focused lasers to target areas to help improve your overall appearance,” said Astrid Mkrtchyan, Owner/Founder of Le Prestige Med Spa.

Le Prestige Med Spa offers services targeted to help you maintain that ageless, youthful look. Their most popular services include Factora Microneedling, Laser Hair Removal (pain-free and effective), Acne Laser Treatment, and Oxygeneo Facial.

“Le Prestige Med Spa is committed to providing customers with VIP royalty service. We are results-driven. We give our best to our clients. Their satisfaction is a priority to us,” said Astrid.

People often talk about high school as being “the glory years”. It’s a stage of life full of excitement and newfound freedom. But, is it really all it’s cracked up to be? Expectations are high, and with that, so are levels of stress. The teen years can be awkward, and with hormones raging and social pressures mounting, it’s hard to know who you are and where you fit in.

Many of my peers entered high school expecting a typical high school experience… complete with a prom straight out of a rom-com. But instead, we ended up with canceled events and canceled sporting games, a global pandemic, virtual classes, and some interesting attempts at a graduation ceremony. A lot has changed in a short time, and with that, the mental health of youth has been highly affected.

It’s not uncommon to experience struggles with mental health during your teen years, and it’s easy to understand why.
There are school pressures, social expectations, relationships, new hormones and emotions to navigate, and the daunting decision of university applications and career choices (that impact the rest of your life).

Needless to say, the Covid climate hasn’t helped either. But where can teens turn when they need support? Especially now. One of the hardest things to acknowledge is the need for help – and asking for help takes courage. However, not everyone is comfortable opening up to family and friends. Rarely do teens know about other resources readily available to them.

From one teen to another, here is a list of resources within our community that I’ve learned we can count on.

Reach Out Centre for Kids

Rockonline.ca

Let’s start with the ROCK (Reach Out Centre for Kids) – a wonderful resource for all ages. With services available throughout Halton, and a large collection of therapists and youth counselors, accessing an appointment comes fairly easily. They also have a vast online system, crisis line, live chats, and a virtual walk-in clinic.

Halton Distress Centre

Dchalton.ca

Similarly, Halton Distress Centre has a crisis line called The Distress Line. On their website, you can find the number to call (the number is city-specific) and you will instantly be placed with one of over 200 trained volunteers – any day, at any hour. A texting service will also be available soon, allowing clients to text a volunteer rather than call.

7 Cups of Tea

7cups.com

If you ever feel like you’ve reached your boiling point, 7 Cups of Tea was made for you. This is a fully digital system offering free support to people experiencing emotional distress. Their services are available to people of all ages and in multiple languages. You can talk with a qualified listener about your thoughts or concerns, or simply get things off your mind in an anonymous and confidential chat. While it may seem intimidating to speak with someone you don’t know, these listeners are trained, respectful, and always ready to chat.

In exploring the struggles that teenagers face, it’s fair to say that sexual identity has recently been pushed to the forefront. Over the past ten years, more people are feeling safe to come out as LGBTQ+, and they’re coming out at younger ages. This can be a difficult process to navigate for parents and kids a like.

The Positive Space Network

Positivespacenetwork.ca

The Positive Space Network (PSN) Halton is an amazing organization that runs group meetings, weekly drop-ins, and even its own annual pride event – all for LGBTQ+ youth. They also have resources for parents, provide referrals for therapy, volunteering opportunities, and gender-affirming gear.

Qspeak Org

Qspeak.org

Another network similar to PSN is Qspeak. Qspeak is an initiative run four times a year and is completely virtual. It is set up to help unify LGBTQ+ youth across Canada. High school students fill out questionnaires and are put into groups led by a university student that also identifies as queer. In these groups, teens participate in discussions about things like representation, stereotypes, pressures, fears, and so much more. It is all communicated in a safe environment, free of judgment. They also have volunteer opportunities and a discord server available to anyone where you can interact with other teens going through similar sexual orientation struggles across Canada.

Although this is not an exhaustive list, it is important to provide youth with the tools to manage their own mental health and ensure they can get help when they need it. As a teenager who has struggled with my own mental health for most of my life and is part of the queer community, it is my personal hope that any teen reading this will feel relief knowing they are not alone. Things may be difficult right now with the pandemic still lurking, but with a large number of resources available to support teen mental health, I feel confident that there is hope for all of us.

The Oakville Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Oakville have joined forces to provide free self-screening kits to small and medium-sized businesses that employ up to 150 employees within the Town of Oakville.

The program’s goal is to identify asymptomatic or presymptomatic individuals and prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the workplace, at home, and throughout the community.

“It has been a difficult and uncertain year for our business community. The free distribution of rapid screening tests will provide much-needed support to assist in the safe reopening of our local economy” says Oakville Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Drew Redden.

SMEs can visit www.oakvillechamber.com/rapidscreening/, and order a two-week supply of Abbott Panbio Antigen screening kits.

Employers are required to appoint a representative who will be responsible for supervising the self-screening process. Appointed supervisors are required to attend the initial pick-up in order to receive video training on testing supervision and safe disposal guidelines. The kits will be available for pick-up, by appointment only, at the former post office located at 193 Church St. in Oakville.  The site will open May 11th and operate weekly Tuesday through Thursday, from 10am to 3pm.

SME’s are required to electronically submit screening results at www.oakvillechamber.com/rapidscreening after each test. Accumulated data will be reported to the appropriate government officials. It is recommended that staff be screened twice weekly.

In the event of a positive test, the employee is required to immediately leave the workplace and notify public health to arrange for a PCR Test at an approved Public Health Collection Site and await further instructions from Halton Region Public Health.

“In an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community, the distribution of free self-screening kits is an important initiative to keep businesses open and help others to re-open. The Oakville Chamber of Commerce has been a part of my Economic Task Force since its inception last March and are a critical partner in helping our businesses through the pandemic and into recovery,” said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. “I encourage all eligible businesses to order their supply of kits.”

The New Year isn’t the only time to make resolutions – but anytime someone says the word resolution, it’s usually followed by something like this: hit the gym, eat more veggies, take chances, reduce stress, live a healthier life – you know the drill. Each and every year we craft a list with the intention to finally start living our best life. And each and every year, without fail, we always seem to fall off the wagon.

I think I speak for many when I say that 2020 was the year that changed everything. For many of us, it put life into perspective. Twenty-twenty forced us out of our comfort zones, into stressful situations, and provided the opportunity to learn what truly matters.

Now, in 2021, we have the chance to take this new perspective and act on it. With help from local experts, we’re providing an alternative approach to the typical resolution…. one that focuses on the mind, the spirit, and the body. We understand fitting into that old pair of jeans is nice – but how we feel on the inside is what truly counts.

Karen Sue-A-Quan, Pediatric Clinical Care Pharmacist at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto and Spiritual Life Coach is an Oakville resident and mom. With a special interest in medication that treats anxiety and pain management, Karen has been directly exposed to the mental health implications of COVID-19. As a Clinical Pharmacist and Life Coach, Karen has created a dual role for herself that complements one another – using science and intuition to help others focus on their soul health.

When it comes to setting goals, Karen says setting goals that are in harmony with who we truly are is key. While it sounds easier said than done, Karen says it’s important to think about the conversations we’re having with ourselves and open our awareness to who we are rather than what’s projected on us. “Everything we experience shapes us. COVID-19 is providing less physical noise and more time to reevaluate what we want from life – but the emotional noise from all of this is loud.”

Karen says things like sleep and nutrition are great for our physical well-being. She stresses “it’s important to make time for joy. Put it at the top of your to-do list – whether it’s music, nature, conversations, or dancing.” Learning about new things such as plants, starting a new program, or taking on a new project can also shift our mindset.

Brenda Jasmin, Public Speaker with a B.A. in Psychology is no stranger to changes that a shift in mindset can bring. Through her studies in positive psychology, Brenda has learned that a positive mindset helps with not only mental health but physical health as well. Research has shown that people with a positive attitude are less prone to depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. They also have less stress, better coping skills (especially during times of hardship), and a better overall mood.

Brenda says, “You can experience sadness surrounding COVID-19 and still have a positive outlook for the future. Look for the good (we typically look for what’s negative) and ask yourself what you can be grateful for at this moment.” No commute, more time with family, and time to explore your neighbourhood trails are just some to consider.

As for a well-rounded resolution, Brenda suggests setting time aside to replenish your energy with gratitude, self-compassion, and time to commiserate with friends and family. Brenda says it’s important to find activities that fill you up rather than drain your energy.

Like Brenda and Karen, yoga instructor and life coach, Renée Walker, is passionate about helping people cultivate self-awareness to help to align their energy level and create more peace in their day. Renée says that now more than ever it’s important to disconnect from external noise and simply “be”.

“I hesitate to talk about resolutions as I prefer to think of them as daily practices that focus on your ‘being’ instead of your ‘doing’”, says Renée. She recommends finding ways to find peace and being present in the moment. “I love the idea of daily rituals because they are unique for each person. They can include activities such as meditation, journaling, visualization, a walk outside or simply taking a moment to drink your coffee/tea each morning free of distractions.” This provides an opportunity to begin your day with intention instead of moving straight into a more reactive mode which usually involves giving to others.

If you’re not sure how to get started on this new approach to the resolution, one that focuses on the health of your mind and body – our experts know just where to start.

Karen (karensueaquan.com) runs a class called ‘Soul School’ which helps people connect with their true self – Karen stresses that if we understand who we are, our mind will be more at ease and we’ll be more likely to achieve what’s important to us.

This January, Brenda (brendajasmin.com) started running an online class called ‘Happiness Habits’, where you can learn how to apply positive psychology tools to your life. Brenda will also be running a corporate program in resilience training.

As for Renée (reneewalkerwellness.com), she’s running a series of mental wellness courses on her website, covering everything from meditation, finding balance, and teaching you how to be accountable to your goals as you honour and make yourself a priority.

Resolutions should make your life less stressful – so with guidance from these three ladies, kick-off new goals that truly matter to you!

Canadian winters. They can be harsh, they can be cold, and they can be down-right unfriendly to our hair and our skin. While it’s impossible to avoid sleet and snow, there are a variety of things we can do to keep our hair and skin healthy all winter long. Say goodbye to dryness, breakage, and flaking with winter tips from our local experts.

The simplest way to take care of both our skin and our hair is to make sure we stay hydrated. Adding extra hydration is as simple as drinking more water, but Elena Dyagileva, the owner of Bodega Wellness in Burlington, adds, “Another way to prevent dry skin during the winter months is to find a moisturizer you can use every day.”

At Bodega Wellness, Dyagileva offers CBD products that are full of ingredients the skin loves. “CBD is proven to carry high anti-inflammatory properties while also being a natural antioxidant, signifying that it can help lessen the visible signs of aging skin,” she says. “By counteracting free-radical damage, CBD oils and creams may help diminish issues such as wrinkles, skin dullness, firmness, and reddish skin tones.”

The same can be said for hair care. Liana Cortina at Salon 360 in Aldershot says hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, “The winter takes the moisture right out of our hair. I always recommend a weekly deep conditioning mask for my clients. Let it sit on the hair for 20 minutes. You can also hydrate your hair over night with an oil. It’s important to put the moisture we lose back into the hair.”

Both Teo Manning, owner of Gyökér Hair in Oakville, and Laura Bradburn, owner of Styled Lounge in Burlington say extra hydration is a must. “In the winter, the efforts of moisturizing our hair should not necessarily be increased, but consistent. Winter can be very harsh, so, if you skip opportunities to moisturize your hair, it can quickly lead to breakage,” says Manning.

A common mistake is over-washing and over-styling our hair. By washing our hair every day and using products like hairspray and mousse, our hair is stripped of natural oils that the scalp needs.

“We often make the mistake of washing our hair too often,” Bradburn says. “Even with the right products, it can strip the good, natural stuff from your hair. Focus on training your hair to be washed less often by using dry shampoo instead of washing every day.” Liana adds, hot showers can dry our scalp and hair, so it’s best to rinse with lukewarm water.

Before the cold sets in, Bradburn recommends getting a head-start on beating the dryness by using a multi-benefit product, such as a hair mask. Manning also suggests sleeping with a silk pillowcase or using a humidifier in your home to contribute to healthy hair.

The general consensus from all of our experts: moisture is key. The elements can be harsh and make our hair and skin more prone to damage – sun included. Invest in a good moisturizer, a great conditioner, and wear a hat (damp hair makes colour fade faster). With these tips, you’ll come out of the winter months glowing – even if you can’t take the much-needed vacation down south.
