Finding the perfect gift can sometimes feel overwhelming, but there’s a solution that never goes out of style – gift baskets! These treasure troves of goodies are versatile, thoughtful, and full of surprises. What’s not to love?

Whether you’re looking for a hostess gift, a corporate gesture, or something with a personal touch, a gift basket fits the bill. Here’s why:

Full of Variety

A gift basket is multiple gifts in one. Perfect for those who like to sample new things, or that hard-to-buy-for someone who seems to have everything, it packs a lot of joy in one bundle. An assortment of treats, snacks, or even self-care products is an eye-catching gift that’s brimming with small treasures to enjoy, one piece at a time, throughout the holiday season.

Wrapped and Ready

For anyone juggling a busy holiday schedule (aren’t we all?), gift baskets are a life- saver. Many local shops offer pre-made baskets you can grab and go – no wrapping required! Festive bows and themed decorations add seasonal cheer to each basket.

At Christy’s Gourmet Gifts, for example, pre-made golden gift boxes filled with assorted handmade chocolates and sweets have become an annual customer tradition. “They’re the gift people look forward to year after year,” says Christy Mueller, co-owner of Christy’s Gourmet. Customers can choose one of the shop’s pre-made boxes or hand-select items they’d like to include.

Gift to Anyone

Gift baskets are a great option for family, a co-worker or client, a neighbour, a close friend, or virtually anyone on your gift list. They’re thoughtful without being overly personal and work well for large groups or party hosts, too. And they look impressive because they’re filled with treats such as gourmet food, craft beer, wine, chocolate, self-care goodies or a combination of surprises.

They’re also a great choice when you don’t know the recipient well. “A gift basket is still more personal than a gift card,” says Diane Bentivegna, owner and Founder of Mrs. B’s Gifthouse. “There’s always going to be something in them that they’ll like.”

Easy to Share

One of the best things about gift baskets is how sharable they are. Imagine opening up a basket filled with cheeses, crackers, or hot cocoa for everyone at your workplace to enjoy. Spreading cheer is what gift giving is all about.

What makes the perfect gift basket?

Include a signature item. Every gift basket needs a standout piece, and at Mrs. B’s Gifthouse it’s biscotti! Bentivegna and her team hand make their famous biscotti in house and even offer gluten-free options. At Christy’s Gourmet, their Belgian milk chocolate toffee crunch is a crowd-pleasing favourite, along with their whipped butter shortbread for the holidays. Whatever the choice, these goodies are the “wow” factor.

Personalize It. Even when you buy a pre-made basket, there’s still room for a personal touch. Add a handwritten note or a sentimental item like a tree ornament to make the gift truly special. Mrs. B’s Gifthouse often includes gifts customers bring in to add to their pre-made baskets. “If you make chocolate chip cookies your friend loves, you can bring those in and we’ll put them in your gift basket,” says Bentivegna.

“The gift people look forward to year after year”

Build your own. Have fun creating a personalized gift basket! Make it sweet (think chocolates, cookies, hot chocolate mixes), savoury (cheese, crackers, chips, nuts), or practical (tools and gizmos from the hardware store), the sky’s the limit. A self-care themed basket could include candles, bath soaps, gourmet snacks and artisanal goodies. Don’t forget dietary SENIORS HELPER restrictions – many gourmet shops now make gluten-free treats and nut-free options so everyone can enjoy.

This holiday season, don’t fret about how to express your generosity, gratitude or love. Gift baskets are the perfect way to deliver holiday spirit, offering variety, thoughtfulness and the joy of discovering what’s inside.

It’s time for that annual spring cleaning ritual when we venture into the depths of our closets to conquer clutter and bid farewell to wardrobe relics of seasons past. But what do you do with items that are no longer wanted — the ones you bought on impulse and never wore, or ordered online and couldn’t return?

Consignment shops offer a solution, turning forgotten garments or outdated furnishings into someone else’s treasure. In a world where sustainability is chic and thriftiness is celebrated (and let’s face it, necessary in today’s economy), consignment shops have emerged as unsung heroes of our spring cleaning escapades.

An eco-friendly twist to traditional retail, sellers can monetize their decluttering efforts, and thrifters can nab unique finds that fit their budget.

Eco Friendly Shopping is In

With growing awareness about environmental issues and the desire to make ethical choices, many consumers favour sustainable retail options. “Bringing in clothes is better for the environment. Rather than just throwing them out, [people] want their clothes to have a second chance,” says Monika Waszczuk, owner of Sell It 2 Wear It in Dundas.

While used clothing used to have a negative connotation, with today’s awareness of the devastating environmental impact of the fashion industry, consumers are more appreciative of giving pre-loved items a second life. “Online platforms such as Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji have helped destigmatize thrifting and buying used,” says Ivy Leung, owner of Kid 2 Kid in Burlington.

But buying second hand doesn’t necessarily mean buying used. Many consignment shops carry new items with tags still attached that have never been worn. “Kids grow so quickly and tweens change their minds too often. Instead of trying to post each item on Marketplace and risk getting ghosted after the fifteenth ‘is this available’ message, it’s much easier to sell everything at once and get cash right away,” says Leung.

Making Money with Consignment

In today’s economy where every dollar counts, the allure of turning old into new and earning a little cash in the process has never been more enticing. While every store operates differently, most consignment stores have a term contract in which they keep the item for three or four months and pay the seller a percentage of the selling price. If the item doesn’t sell within the period, the seller will have the option to take the item back or donate it to charity.

Saving Money with Consignment

Consignment shops offer a win for consumers looking to get more value for their dollar, delivering quality items at lower than retail cost. “Who doesn’t love designer finds at a fraction of the retail price?” asks Heather Aris, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in Bronte.

At Kid to Kid Burlington, sellers are paid cash up front for their gently used kids’ clothing, baby gear and toys. The store provides sellers an additional 20 per cent if they take store credit. “It’s an extra savings if you’re looking to size up,” says owner Ivy Leung.

Our community is home to many consignment stores, each with their own standards for what they will consign and sell. Here are a few examples.

The Millionaire’s Daughter is the place to go for consigning furniture, home decor, and china. With three locations (Oakville, Hamilton and Aurora) and over 15 years of experience in the industry, owner Maureen Barnes says they are the experts in selling pre-loved home decor. Items must be in excellent condition and from non-smoking homes.

Shopping consignment for furniture and home décor makes it affordable and exciting to refresh the look of your space.  Not just antiques…. you will find a huge assortment of items at Millionaire’s Daughter, from pottery to rugs to armoires and dining sets.  And Barnes points out that the search is part of the fun.  You never know what you might find and the inventory turns over regularly.  You need to visit often or stay up to date online to avoid missing out on new items as they come in.

Kid to Kid in Aldershot specializes in children’s resale. Parents receive cash on the spot for the things their kids have outgrown, and can also shop from a huge selection of high quality, slightly used replacement items at discounted prices. The store sells and buys children’s clothing,
sports gear, costumes, toys, dance wear and more.

Sell It 2 Wear It in Dundas looks for clothing items that are unique and different. “I take a large variety of things from vintage to brand new,” says Waszczuk. This store is the place to go if you’re looking for vintage fashion finds such as bell bottom jeans and leather jackets, or unique items from Europe.

My Girlfriend’s Closet in Oakville looks for designer, quality brand name items under two years old in gently worn or mint condition. “Everything has to be dry cleaned, or freshly laundered and pressed or ironed. A large percentage of our items come in with the original tags,” says Aris.

Whether you’re hunting for a new outfit or home decor, a consignment store offers unique and stylish finds that help save you money, and the environment.

I‘ve been working as a writer for just over five years now, but in my previous life – before kids – I carried a fast-paced nine-to-five job in environmental management and sustainability. My career kicked off with the Town of Oakville as a sustainability educator in their Environmental Policy Department. It was a meaningful and fulfilling job, where I collaborated with internal departments, local school boards, conservation authorities, and Halton Region to develop community-based environmental programs. My deep love for our natural environment inspired that career. And while my path in life has changed, my appreciation for the seas and the sky has not.

Environmentalism dates back to the late 19th Century, but the 1960s saw a second wave in environmentalism, marking a different area for conservation. Land and water pollution became a growing concern, not just for naturalist groups but the Canadian population as a whole.

Ten & Co., Oakville

At the turn of the 21st Century and in the early 2000s, Canada experienced a third and fourth wave of environmentalism. Youth began to take an interest in the future of our planet, and large corporations received pressure from both consumers and government to improve sustainability. Greenwashing became a prominent marketing tactic to create a false impression of a company’s “green” practices. While greenwashing is still a thing, today many companies have stepped up to meet or exceed government requirements, earning themselves accreditations (which really helps us as consumers).

This idea of “sustainable” or “eco-friendly” products extends beyond our environment. Intending to live a full, healthy, and long life, consumers have pushed for non-toxic products containing either organic or natural ingredients, especially in items we put on our bodies or use on our most precious population – children and babies. There has even been increased demand for all-natural pet products. The goal: to limit exposure to less-than-ideal ingredients in our environment and our bodies.

A Greener Place, Waterdown
The Kind Matter Company, Oakville

But how can you read between the lines on a label? Refillery Market’s Koby Hicks says to start with the ingredients. Victoria Garofalo, founder of A Greener Place in Waterdown, agrees, saying, “Hard-to-pronounce ingredients aren’t necessarily a bad thing (plant names can be long and confusing!), but there are some common words you should look for. Parabens, parfum, aluminum, and mineral oils aren’t something you want to put on your skin.”

Where’s the best place to find these types of natural products? Look for businesses that not only sell clean products but root themselves in ethical business practices. A Greener Place, EcoFillosophy, Refillery Market, The Kind Matter Company, and Ten & Co. – locally-owned businesses based in Waterdown, Oakville, and Burlington – strive to do just that.

With a “refillery” business model, these zero-to-low waste boutiques carry consciously selected products for home, body, and beyond. Customers can refill glass mason jars (provided with a deposit) with their favourite soap, shampoo, cleaning products, or laundry detergent. Even toothpaste and deodorant can be refilled.

Refillery Market, Burlington

Each boutique meticulously reviews the lifecycle of every product or brand they source, considering ingredients, ethical manufacturing, packaging, and end-user consumption. Oneka, available at Refillery Market, The Kind Matter Company, and A Greener Place, is a popular Quebec-based bulk supplier. They farm their own botanicals for personal care products like shampoo and conditioner. Garofalo notes, “For babies, children, or highly-sensitive individuals, look for products that are unscented or minimally scented with natural oils.” Despite being naturally derived, essential oils can cause skin and breathing irritation to those with sensitivities. Sleepy Owl Baby, an all-natural, small-batch baby care line by Natacha Rey is produced right in Oakville. Rey also created popular cleaning brand, Lemon Aide, and an extensive line of bath, body, and beauty products available through her company, Maison Apothecare. Oh, and those beautiful Swedish Sponge Cloths that everyone loves so much? They’re designed by Ten & Co’s founder, Christen Irwin.

These small-batch products and safer ingredients usually come with a higher price tag – but that’s actually a benefit. High-quality ingredients and ethical business practices (such as not testing on animals and limiting waste) require more time and resources. Plus, Hicks adds, “The cost savings come with refilling.” An example would be that a bottle of Oneka shampoo costs $15 before tax. Refillery Market on the other hand, charges $11 pre-tax when you fill your own bottle. “That’s a $4 saving every time you refill,” notes Hicks. Of course, in the end, the biggest benefit is how a product makes you feel – from the experience at the local refillery to the soft touch of the product on your skin to the impact you leave behind on the seas and the sky. Feeling good can come naturally.

Part adventure, part history lesson, part treasure hunt – whether you’re a long-time collector or the recipient of Granny’s china, there’s a subtle thrill that comes with the world of antiques.

Mainstream fascination with antiques was encouraged by a 1997 BBC documentary touring a West Country Auction House in England. With people’s heightened interest in placing a value on their treasures, whether collected, gifted, or inherited, the BBC recognized they had tapped into something special. Results of viewers’ letters and ratings indicated that Antique Roadshow was – and still is – a hit.

PBS took note of this phenomenon and modeled their Antique Roadshow after the British version. The popularity of that show spawned CBC’s Canadian Antiques Roadshow in 2004 and the Great Canadian Roadshow in 2010.  Both shows are no longer running, but The Wayback Times has been publishing a free guide to antiques and collectibles since 1995, and is a good source of monthly local antique roadshows.  The Vintage Seeker is another great resource for lovers of vintage items and collectibles, and provides up-to-date listings of local antique markets.

What You Should Know

Whether you need an appraisal for insurance purposes or you are thinking of selling an item, it’s important to know an object’s value before selling it. Verbal and written appraisals rely on current market trends and a professional appraiser’s knowledge of antiques — but note that these are only an opinion of value.

The appraisal should include the reason for the appraisal and the type of value. For example, are you interested in selling an object, or is the appraisal required for insurance purposes?

Where to Find Appraisers

The International Society of Appraisers Canada has a credible list of qualified appraisers. These days, appraisals can take place in-person, virtually, and even online – which is a much more affordable option (especially if you’re not completely convinced your item holds any value).

In Burlington, you can try Treasure Antique & Appraisers. They offer appraisals, consignment sales, support with estate sales or downsizing, and prop rentals. They even host appraisal shows at retirement homes and seniors’ centres. Think of them as a local Antiques Roadshow!

In Oakville, you’ll find AG Antiques & Appraisers in Bronte, and Turner Chapel Antiques and Appraisers, located in what was the historic African Methodist Episcopalian Church, established in 1890.  AG Antiques purchases the best in artwork, fine English and continental furniture, porcelain, and china, while also offering appraisals and prop rentals.  Turner Chapel offers consignment, auction evaluations, formal appraisals, antique repairs, and prop rentals.

Some of the Best Antique Shops that Oakville and Burlington have to offer

At Nagwa’s Antiques on Speers Road in Oakville, you can expect to find the truly elegant pieces of a time gone by, as well as friendly service.

My Back Shed – Kerr Street, Oakville

My Back Shed recently moved from Bronte to Kerr Street in Oakville, and is the destination spot for all enthusiasts of French country, antiques, hand-painted furniture, and shabby chic home decor.

At AG Antiques & Appraisers in Bronte, proprietor Anna Gardner offers the best silver, artwork, porcelain, and furnishings.

Treasure Antique & Appraisers in Burlington is a great place for Royal Doulton, Dresden, and Hummel collectors. They host Antique Appraisal Days in various locations.

ODDSPOT in Burlington is where you’ll find more than 1,000 uniquely unexpected items like records to a clothes iron from the 1800s.

What’s Hot

Sometimes it just isn’t practical to keep older items around the house, even if they hold sentimental value.  If you’re holding onto them and wondering when the best time to sell is, you can lean on your local experts to guide you. But, according to reputable antique bloggers, these are some of the most sought-after antiques for 2022:

Novelty barware, hunting decoys, depression glass, original paintings, old clocks, vintage typewriters, perfume bottles, leather books.

The important takeaway: do your research before you sell – you never know what that old treasure tucked away in the basement or the attic might be worth.
